- Non-CA tax consultants have no professional-body ban on advertising, but every claim must be true: misleading ads can attract penalties under the Consumer Protection Act.
- Start with a clear niche and a one-sentence offer, so people know exactly whom you help.
- Get found locally with a verified Google Business Profile and a simple website; ask for genuine reviews only, never paid or rewarded ones.
- Referrals, a same-day reply to every enquiry and a written fee quote win more clients than ads alone.
- Message only people who agreed to hear from you, and hire and train help before the busy season, not during it.
Most advice on how to get clients for tax consultant offices is written either for big firms or for chartered accountants, who work under strict advertising rules. This guide is for independent tax consultants and tax practitioners who are not CAs, and for the staff who help them. You will get a plain plan: whom to serve, how to be found, how to earn referrals, how to turn enquiries into clients, how to keep them, and when to hire help.
Who this guide is for, and who should read something else
If you are a tax consultant who is not a member of ICAI, ICSI, ICMAI or a Bar Council, no professional body bans you from advertising. That gives you more room than a CA. It does not give you room to exaggerate. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements, 2022, cover service providers as well as manufacturers. The Government's press release of 10 June 2022 says penalties can go up to Rs. 10 lakh, and up to Rs. 50 lakh for repeat contraventions.

How to get clients for tax consultant work: decide whom you serve
"I do all tax work for everyone" is hard to remember and hard to recommend. "I handle returns and compliance for salaried people and small shops in Kothrud" is easy. A clear niche makes every other step cheaper.
| Niche | Where they come from | What they value |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried employees | Colleagues, housing societies, family | Speed, a fair fixed fee, reminders |
| Small traders and shops | Market associations, suppliers, neighbours | Someone who picks up the phone, regular visits |
| Freelancers and creators | Online communities, word of mouth | Clear explanations, digital document collection |
| NRIs with Indian income | Families in India, community groups | Responsiveness across time zones, written updates |
| Small professionals (doctors, tutors) | Their own clients, local clinics and institutes | Minimal paperwork, year-round reminders |
Choose one or two. Write your one-sentence offer and use it everywhere: your card, your profile, your WhatsApp status and your website.
Be easy to find in your area
When people need a tax consultant, they often start with a search on Google or Maps. Three things help them find you.
- A verified Google Business Profile. Google's help page explains how to add or claim your profile and verify it. Fill in your services, hours, photos of the office and the area you serve.
- A simple website. One page per service, who it is for, the documents needed and how to start. You may show prices if you wish, but keep them honest, with what is included and what is not.
- Genuine reviews. After good work, ask the client for an honest review. Never offer a discount, cash or free service in return. Google's Maps content policy prohibits incentives for reviews and requires reviews to reflect a genuine experience.

Referrals and your local network
For many small tax offices, referrals are the biggest source of new clients. A referred client already trusts you, argues less about the fee and often stays for years.
Sales Academy has 25 chapters and 101 action points on marketing, Google, WhatsApp, referrals, sales meetings, proposals and pricing, with a separate rule track for tax consultants. 200+ tax professionals have bought it.
- Happy clients. When a piece of work is finished and the client is happy, they are most open to recommending you. That is when a short "if anyone in your family needs help, I'd be glad to" works best.
- Say thank you, not pay. Thank the person who referred a client, warmly and in writing. Avoid paying or offering rewards for referrals: earn them through reliable work and clear communication.
- Other professionals. Build a short list of a CA (for audits and certificates you cannot sign), an advocate (for litigation) and a company secretary. Refer clients to them when it helps the client. Note that CAs and advocates have their own rules on referral fees, so do not offer them commission.
- People who meet your clients. Bank staff, housing society secretaries, trade association office bearers. Be known to them as reliable, and protect client details: never share a client's information without consent.
Turn enquiries into clients
Many offices lose clients after the first call, not before it. Fix these four steps and you will win more of the enquiries you already get.
- Reply the same day. Use the free WhatsApp Business app for a greeting message, quick replies and labels such as "new enquiry" and "documents pending".
- Send a clear document list. One message, numbered, in plain words, with a simple way to send scans.
- Quote the fee in writing before you start. Say what is included, what costs extra and when payment is due. Price surprises lose more clients than high prices.
- Confirm the scope. A short engagement letter or message with the work, the timeline and what you need from the client.
Message only people who contacted you or agreed to hear from you. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy allows businesses to contact people only if they gave their number and opted in, and it requires you to respect opt-outs. The Client Handling & Fee Collection course has ready engagement letters, pricing guidance and polite payment scripts, and How to Ask a Client for Payment Politely: 7 CA Scripts has seven messages you can adapt.
Keep clients year after year
Keeping a client is usually easier than finding a new one. Many clients who leave do so quietly, after a season of silence or one bad experience.
- Year-round contact. A reminder before each deadline, a short note when a rule changes, a call after a good result.
- Family plans. One clear fee for each additional family member, with each person's consent before they join your reminder list.
- Renewal messages. A month before the season, tell each client what you did for them last year and what you will need this year.
- Automated reminders. A simple sheet and scheduled messages make regular follow-up much easier. See AI Automation for CA Firms: 10 Jobs to Automate Now and the AI & No-Code Automation course for reminders that send themselves.
Plan the year around the busy season
Tax work comes in waves, so your client-getting should too. A simple yearly rhythm stops you from marketing only when you are already overloaded.
| When | Focus |
|---|---|
| Quiet months after the season | Update your website and profile, ask happy clients for reviews, meet your referral partners |
| A month before the season | Renewal messages, tell existing clients you can help their family, refresh document lists |
| During the season | Fast replies, no new channels, note every question clients ask |
| Right after the season | Thank-you messages, collect pending fees, review your enquiry register |
Whatever your niche, this rhythm is the honest answer to how to get clients for tax consultant offices without burning out: prepare when it is quiet, and serve well when it is busy.
Hiring and training help as you grow
The moment you are turning down work in July, it is time to hire. Hire before the season, not during it, so the new person learns in a calm month.
- Write down your process first. Document collection, checks before filing, how you name files, what goes to the client and when. A two-page checklist is enough to start.
- Train in the first week. Sit the new person beside you for real files, then let them do one while you check.
- Protect client data from day one. Separate logins, no client files on personal phones, and a clear rule on passwords and OTPs.
- Give staff the same playbook. If your staff answer calls and WhatsApp, they need the same enquiry steps and the same honest tone as you.
The Office Subscription Plan gives every person in your office every course, including client handling, Excel, AI and data safety. The small office plan (you plus 5 staff) is Rs. 1,499 + GST a year, about Rs. 4 a day for the whole office.
An honest marketing checklist
- Every claim on your card, profile and website is true and you can prove it.
- No "guaranteed refund", "100% approval" or "government approved" unless it is literally true.
- Prices, if shown, say what is included and what is extra.
- Reviews are genuine, never paid for or rewarded.
- Messages go only to people who agreed to hear from you; opt-outs are honoured at once.
- Client details are never shared without consent, including with referrers.
- You refer out work you are not qualified or allowed to do.
For a structured plan, Sales Academy for tax professionals covers marketing, Google, WhatsApp, referrals, sales meetings, proposals and pricing, with a rule track for tax consultants alongside the CA track. Read the first chapter free, then work through the Sales Academy action points before your next busy season.
Rules change: check the latest official guidelines and platform policies before you act.
Questions people ask
Can a tax consultant advertise?
A tax consultant who is not a CA, CS, CMA or advocate is not bound by a professional body's advertising ban. Advertisements must still be truthful: the Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines on misleading advertisements apply to service providers too.
How can I get tax clients quickly before the filing season?
Tell your existing clients you have capacity for their family and friends, make sure your Google Business Profile is verified and up to date, and reply to every enquiry the same day. Start a few weeks before the season, when people begin searching.
Is it okay to pay for referrals?
For a non-member tax consultant, a referral thank-you is not barred by a professional body. Keep it honest: agree it upfront, record it, and never let it change the advice the client gets. If you are a CA, CS, CMA or advocate, your own rules apply instead.
Can I offer a discount for Google reviews?
No. Google's Maps content policy prohibits offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews. Ask happy clients for an honest review and leave it at that.
Can I send WhatsApp messages to people who are not my clients?
Only if they gave you their number and agreed to receive messages from you. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires that opt-in, and you must respect opt-out requests.
