Key points
  • The best new line usually grows out of clients you already serve.
  • Virtual CFO and client MIS turn routine compliance clients into monthly advisory retainers.
  • Bank branch and C&AG audits need a year of preparation, and public sector bank branch audits will need a peer review certificate.
  • ESG, forensic, insolvency and valuation work need extra training or registration.
  • Make a new line known within the revised ICAI Code: factual, no solicitation.

Compliance work keeps a practice running, but fees are under pressure and much of it is being automated. That is why so many practising CAs are looking at new areas of CA practice. This guide covers seven service lines you can realistically add in 2026: what each involves, what it needs from your firm, the rules to check first, and how to make it known within the ICAI Code. Pick one or two. Nobody needs all seven.

New areas of CA practice: the seven at a glance

Service lineBest forWhat it needs first
1. Virtual CFO retainerFirms with good MSME clientsPackages, a scope letter, a monthly routine
2. Client MIS and dashboardsFirms already doing bookkeepingExcel or Power BI skills, clean books
3. Bank branch and C&AG auditsAudit firms with stable teamsMEF and C&AG empanelment, records in order
4. Larger assurance workFirms ready for peer reviewA peer review certificate, quality systems
5. ESG and social impact workFirms with corporate clientsTraining, a clear scope
6. Forensic and AI-related advisoryFirms with investigative or tech strengthSpecialist training, careful engagement terms
7. Insolvency and valuationExperienced CAsIBBI registration after exams and courses

The common thread: the best new line usually grows out of clients you already serve. A client who trusts you with returns and books is far more likely to buy a monthly review than a stranger.

1 and 2. Virtual CFO and client MIS

Many MSME owners have sales but no clear view of margins, receivables or cash. They cannot afford a full-time CFO. A virtual CFO retainer fills that gap: a monthly check of the books, a short MIS report, a cash view for the next few weeks and a monthly meeting with the owner.

The ICAI press release of 12 December 2025 on the revised Code confirms that management consultancy is a wide field, and the list now includes social impact assessment, AI-related services and forensic accounting. Virtual CFO work sits within management consultancy. One caution matters: if you are also the statutory auditor of a company client, section 144 of the Companies Act, 2013 bars the auditor from certain services, including management services and accounting. Check independence before you offer a retainer to an audit client.

Launch a Virtual CFO Line covers what owners want, packages and scope, pricing the retainer, the independence check, offering it within the rules, the scope letter, the MIS pack, a 13-week cash view and renewal. Our Virtual CFO Services for CAs: Packages and Pricing article goes into packages in more detail.

Client MIS can also stand on its own. If you already keep a client's books, a one-page monthly report on sales, collections, expenses and cash is a natural add-on. Power BI for Tax & Accounts Offices shows how to build a monthly client MIS you refresh in minutes, alongside dashboards for your own office.

In a real office Kavita, a CA in Pune, noticed that three of her bookkeeping clients called every month asking "how are we doing?" She started sending each a one-page MIS with a short call. A year later, those calls were a separate monthly fee, agreed in a scope letter.

Launch a Virtual CFO Line covers packages, pricing, the independence check, the scope letter, the MIS pack, a 13-week cash view and renewals.

3. Bank branch and C&AG audits through empanelment

Bank branch audits and audits of government companies come through panels, not through marketing. For bank branch audits, firms fill ICAI's Multipurpose Empanelment Form (MEF) every year. ICAI shares this information with RBI, NABARD and other authorities for empanelment, including bank branch audit. The 2026-27 cycle has closed; dates for the next cycle come from the next ICAI announcement.

C&AG empanelment is a separate process for audits of government companies. Its 2026-27 policy requires at least one full-time FCA partner or proprietor and awards points for full-time CA partners, full-time CA employees and the firm's experience. Both need records that match ICAI's data, and planning a year ahead.

Getting Empanelled covers how panels work, the MEF and bank branch panel, C&AG empanelment, what panels count, keeping records right and a year-ahead plan. See also Bank Audit Empanelment (MEF): Prepare for 2027-28.

4. Larger assurance work with a peer review certificate

ICAI's peer review mandate has been rolled out in phases. The next date matters to many firms: under Phase IV, from 31 December 2026, firms that propose to audit branches of public sector banks need a peer review certificate as a pre-requisite, and firms rendering attestation services with three or more partners need one before accepting any statutory audit. ICAI announced this on 31 December 2025.

So peer review is no longer only for firms auditing listed companies. A firm that wants bank branch audits, or larger statutory audits, needs to treat peer review as part of its growth plan. Peer Review Ready covers whether the mandate applies, applying and choosing a reviewer, the quality control manual, independence, what the reviewer samples and getting files ready. 5 and 6. ESG, forensic and AI-related advisory

ESG and social impact. The revised Code of Ethics lists assessment and evaluation of social impact, CSR impact and business responsibility and sustainability reporting among management consultancy services. ICAI's announcement notes this item took effect earlier, on 11 December 2025. This suits firms with corporate or larger clients, and needs real training before you take an engagement.

A sensible way in is to start with what your corporate clients already ask about: what data they need to collect, who in their team owns it, and how the numbers tie back to their books. Clear, well-documented work on these basics builds the trust needed for larger engagements later.

Forensic accounting and AI-related services. ICAI's December 2025 press release names both in the expanded management consultancy list. Forensic work suits firms with strong audit and investigation skills. AI-related advisory can start small: helping clients set up safe AI use, document workflows or automation in their accounts teams. In both, write the scope and limits carefully in the engagement letter.

Tip Before adding a specialist line, list three existing clients who would genuinely need it this year. If you cannot name three, it is probably not your next line.

7. Insolvency and valuation through IBBI

Both lines are regulated by the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) and need registration before you can practise them.

  • Registered valuer. IBBI's FAQs say an applicant must complete a mandatory 50-hour educational course in the asset class and pass the valuation examination for it, along with the qualification and experience set out in the Rules. There are three asset classes: land and building, plant and machinery, and securities and financial assets.
  • Insolvency professional. The route runs through IBBI: the Limited Insolvency Examination, enrolment with an insolvency professional agency, a pre-registration course and registration. Eligibility rules change, so check IBBI's current requirements before planning this line. Those with less experience go through the Graduate Insolvency Programme first.

These lines take time to build and suit experienced CAs. Check IBBI's current pages before you start, as requirements can be revised.

How to choose your first new line

Exploring new areas of CA practice is exciting, but spreading the firm across five new lines at once usually ends with none done well. Use three plain questions to choose.

  1. Who already needs it? Count the existing clients who would use the service this year. Real demand from people who already trust you beats a market report.
  2. What does it need from us? Some lines need only skills and a routine, like MIS. Others need registration, a peer review certificate or a full-time FCA partner. Be honest about the gap and the time to close it.
  3. Does it fit our audit work? If a client is also an audit client, independence rules may limit what you can offer them. Some lines suit non-audit clients better.

Then give the chosen line twelve months. Write a short plan: the first three clients, the package and scope, who in the team owns it, and how you will measure it. A new line that brings five steady retainers in a year has done its job, and it is a better base for the next one than seven half-started ideas.

Making a new line known, within the rules

A new service only grows if the right people know about it. For CAs, this must stay within the ICAI Code of Ethics. The revised Code, applicable from 1 April 2026, updated the advertisement and website guidelines. ICAI's press release says non-exclusive services, such as consultancy and accounting, may now be promoted through push mode. Solicitation is still not allowed, and services exclusive to CAs need more care.

Checklist
  • Add a factual service page to your website for the new line.
  • Write one or two helpful articles on the topic, with no claims of superiority.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile accurate and up to date.
  • Tell existing clients only when the need comes up in your normal work, or when they ask.
  • No testimonials, comparisons or fee claims in public material.

Website SEO for Tax Professionals covers service pages that rank, Google Business Profile and Search Console, within the ICAI website rules.

Within the rules Independence, advertisement and empanelment rules apply to every line above. Rules change: check the latest ICAI announcement before you act.

Start with the line closest to your current clients. For many firms that is a virtual CFO or MIS retainer, but choose only after weighing your skills, independence and real client demand. The Virtual CFO course lets you read the first lesson free, so you can judge whether it fits your firm before you commit.

Questions people ask

What are the new areas of practice for chartered accountants?

Common ones in 2026 are virtual CFO and MIS services, bank and C&AG audits through empanelment, larger audits that need a peer review certificate, ESG and social impact work, forensic accounting, and insolvency or valuation work after the required registration.

Can a CA provide virtual CFO services?

Virtual CFO work falls under management consultancy, which practising CAs may offer. If you also audit the client, check the ICAI independence rules and, for companies, section 144 of the Companies Act, which bars the auditor from certain services such as management services.

Is peer review mandatory for bank branch audits?

Under Phase IV of ICAI's peer review mandate, firms that propose to audit branches of public sector banks need a peer review certificate as a pre-requisite, from 31 December 2026 as per ICAI's announcement of 31 December 2025.

How can a CA become a registered valuer or insolvency professional?

Both run through IBBI. A valuer needs a 50-hour educational course and the valuation examination for the asset class, plus the qualification and experience in the Rules. The insolvency professional route runs through the Limited Insolvency Examination, agency enrolment and a pre-registration course; check IBBI's current eligibility rules first.

Can a CA advertise a new service?

Within limits. The revised ICAI Code, applicable from 1 April 2026, allows push mode for services not exclusive to CAs, such as consultancy and accounting, but solicitation is still not allowed. Check the current ICAI guidance before you publish.
